At the Bottom of Baja

Sun, 30 Nov 1997 09:06:12 -0700

Here we are safely in Cabo San Lucas. This is the third major milestone in our trip after San Francisco and San Diego. It is four weeks since we left San Diego. We had intended to spend a few days in Ensanada, the only major port on the west coast of Baja, but ended up staying two weeks at anchor in the harbor.

We really enjoyed Ensanada, it was a good introduction into being in Mexico again. After a week, we would say we would leave manana. Manana has two literal translations in Spanish: morning and tomorrow, depending on the context.. However the real meaning is: not today, maybe some unspecified day in the future. We have been using it a lot.

Since leaving Ensanda we day sailed or overnight sailed from one remote anchorage to another. At two places, Turtle Bay and Asuncion, we went ashore to the fishing village and walked aroung the dirt streets, bought goodies at the bakery and beer at the beer outlet. Everywhere the Mexican people have been wonderful, always friendly, helpful and tolerant of our inability to speak Spanish. We are able to communicate a few words and phrases and hope to improve as time passes. It is very difficult for both of us, we wish we could pick it up like some people we have met. The children are delightful, pretty and well behaved. They are always well dressed and clean, even the poor ones who try to sell stuff to the tourists.

We have been eating well and, so far, have not been affected by the tourista. We have caught yellowtail and skipjack by trolling a line off the stern and have bought lobster from the fishermen. Our best buy was three lobster for a pack of cigarettes and the most was $1.50 each.

We just got to Cabo yesterday and went ashore to dinner with Seattle people we met in San Diego and Ensanada. We don't know how long we will be here, probably less than a week. It looks really touristy and not very Mexican. We may go from here to La Paz, which is a bit out of our way and entails beating into the prevailing winds. We do have a definite plan to be in Mazatlan from December 15 to January 15 at the Marina El Cid, where we have reservations. We got a fairly good rate if we stayed a month. We did this because we were told that the major ports fill up quickly over the Christmas and New Year period and we didn't want to worry about finding a place.

We are heading into town now in the dinghy to try to find the Internet Cafe to send this off and download messages waiting for us.

More news soon, hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving.
